Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating Introduce
For residents and homeowners on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, maintaining a comfortable and functional home often means having reliable plumbing and heating systems. The unique challenges of island living – from harsh coastal weather that can impact pipes to the need for dependable heat during brisk New England winters – make the choice of a plumbing and heating professional incredibly important. When a faucet breaks, a water pump fails, or the heat goes out, you need more than just a repair; you need a partner who understands the intricacies of island infrastructure and can respond effectively, even in an emergency. Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating, based in Edgartown, has established itself as a long-standing and deeply embedded service provider for the Martha's Vineyard community. While like any business, they've faced varied customer experiences, their decades of operation and commitment to emergency support highlight their enduring role on the island. This comprehensive article will delve into what makes Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating a key resource for locals, covering their accessible location, the types of services they offer, notable customer experiences, and essential contact information, all from the perspective of a Massachusetts local seeking trustworthy home services.
The significance of a deeply rooted local plumbing and heating service for Martha's Vineyard residents cannot be overstated. Island living, while idyllic, presents unique logistical and environmental challenges for home maintenance. Ferry schedules, limited access to mainland supplies, and specific building regulations often mean that off-island contractors may struggle to provide timely and cost-effective solutions. A local company like Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating, with 20 years or more of experience serving the island, possesses invaluable institutional knowledge. They understand how coastal conditions, such as salt air and high humidity, can affect plumbing and heating systems, and they are familiar with the specific types of wells, septic systems, and heating setups common to Vineyard homes. This local expertise is critical for accurate diagnosis and effective repairs. Furthermore, for a close-knit community like Martha's Vineyard, reputation is everything. A business that has thrived for decades relies on consistent, reliable service and positive word-of-mouth. Knowing that Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating has been a staple for so long, and even responds to emergencies on holiday weekends, speaks volumes about their commitment to the island's residents. This deep local integration translates to a more personal connection, a greater sense of accountability, and ultimately, more peace of mind for island homeowners facing plumbing or heating crises.

This address places them firmly within one of Martha's Vineyard's most prominent towns, making them highly accessible for residents not only in Edgartown but also across the entire island. Weeks Lane is situated in a well-established area of Edgartown, facilitating easy navigation for customers needing to visit their premises or for their service vehicles to quickly dispatch to various locations. Being based directly on Martha's Vineyard is a significant advantage, particularly when rapid response is critical, such as during a water pump failure or an unexpected burst pipe. Unlike mainland contractors who might face ferry delays or logistical hurdles, Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating can mobilize their team promptly, minimizing potential damage and inconvenience for island homeowners. Their long-standing presence and local base mean they are intimately familiar with the unique geographical layout of the island, from remote cottages to busy commercial properties. This local accessibility underscores their dedication to providing timely and efficient plumbing and heating solutions, reinforcing their role as a reliable and essential service provider for the Martha's Vineyard community.
Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating offers a comprehensive range of plumbing and heating services designed to meet the diverse needs of homeowners and businesses across Martha's Vineyard. Their dual specialization allows them to address a wide array of issues, from routine maintenance to complex system replacements. Based on customer reviews and general industry offerings for similar businesses, their services likely include:
General Plumbing Repairs: Addressing common issues such as leaky faucets (like pullout kitchen faucets), running toilets, dripping pipes, and other household plumbing nuisances.
Water Pump Services: As highlighted by a critical customer experience, they are highly capable of replacing and repairing water pumps, which are essential for many island homes relying on well water.
Heating System Services: Installation, repair, and maintenance of various heating systems, including furnaces, boilers, and potentially heat pumps, crucial for Massachusetts winters.
Water Heater Services: Repair, installation, and replacement of traditional tank water heaters and possibly tankless water heaters, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water.
Drain Cleaning: Clearing clogged drains in sinks, showers, toilets, and main sewer lines to restore proper drainage.
Pipe Repair and Replacement: Addressing issues with old, corroded, or burst pipes, which is especially important given the age of some island properties.
Fixture Installation and Repair: Professional installation and repair of plumbing fixtures in kitchens and bathrooms, including sinks, showers, and tubs.
Emergency Plumbing & Heating Services: As demonstrated by a holiday weekend response, they provide critical emergency services, talking customers through solutions or dispatching technicians promptly for urgent situations.
Routine Maintenance: Offering scheduled check-ups and preventative maintenance for both plumbing and heating systems to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating has a long history of serving Martha's Vineyard, and customer reviews reflect a nuanced picture of their strengths and areas of concern. However, their enduring presence and strong advocates highlight several key features and highlights:
Exceptional Emergency Responsiveness: This is arguably their standout feature. One customer explicitly praised their "How cool is that?" response during a holiday weekend emergency, with Mr. Smith calling back in "about 8 minutes" and talking them through a solution over the phone, "no charge." This level of commitment to emergency situations is invaluable for island residents.
Long-Standing Local Trust: Several customers have relied on their services for "20 years," indicating a deep-rooted trust and consistent positive experiences over a significant period. This long-term relationship building speaks volumes about their overall reliability for many in the community.
Expertise and Problem-Solving (Especially for Complex Issues): The "Herculean effort" to successfully replace a water pump on a Saturday, despite "a bunch of reasons" making it difficult, demonstrates their tenacity and skill in tackling challenging jobs. Technicians like Rick are recognized for their capability.
Courtesy and Professionalism: While not universally consistent, many positive reviews imply a general level of courteous and professional interaction from their team, contributing to a satisfactory service experience.
Island-Specific Understanding: Their longevity on Martha's Vineyard means they inherently understand the unique challenges and systems present in island homes, which can be critical for effective service.
Higher Pricing (Martha's Vineyard Context): It's acknowledged by loyal customers that their services "are a little pricey -- hello, this is Martha's Vineyard." This suggests that while prices may be higher than mainland counterparts, this is often accepted as part of the cost of doing business on the island, where logistics and specialized skills command a premium.
Challenges with Pricing Transparency and Hourly Rates (Area for Improvement): One critical review highlighted concerns about a lack of upfront price estimates for hourly work and a perception of being "taken advantage of" due to a five-hour bill for a relatively simple faucet replacement. This indicates that while their service quality can be high, clear communication regarding hourly rates and potential duration of work is an area where some customers have faced issues.

Walter Smith Plumbing & Heating Reviews
We needed our pullout kitchen faucet replaced (broken hose, no pipework involved). They did not have the same faucet and charged us over $200 for the piece alone. When we asked about the price of the service they told us that they could not give us a price estimate as it was an hourly rate. Naively, we accepted the service and found ourselves billed for FIVE hours of service at a rate of over $120 an hour. Felt taken advantage of.
Jul 22, 2024 · Anna HughesOctober 2024 update: Our water pump failed on a Saturday. They (Rick & Co.) were here in 2 hours and (for a bunch of reasons) went through a Herculean effort to successfully replace it. They are the best.I don't know who these people are who wrote this one-star review two weeks ago (whereas my name is public), but we've been using these folks for 20 years and never had any experience that wasn't positive. Of course they are a little pricey -- hello, this is Martha's Vineyard, but they always get the job done. The specific reason I'm posting today is that this is a holiday weekend, they are closed...and yet when I called in with a plumbing emergency, they got back to me in about 8 minutes. How cool is that? Mr. Smith talked me through the solution over the phone -- no charge.

Oct 13, 2024 · Al LewisWSP has been winterizing our house and acting as our plumber for over 25 years. Last year they came to fix a problem with our sink and when we came home, the sink was cracked with a note on it saying "do not use." When I called them to find out what happened, they claimed the sink was cracked beforehand. It was not. When I pressed them on it, they were incredible disrespectful and nasty (as another reviewer noted) and at first refused to replace the sink but finally did replace it. Then, when we called them the next time for plumbing work, they told us they were firing us.

Dec 30, 2021 · susan balabanBeen customers since 1983. WSP roughed our house in 1983. Over the years they replaced water heaters, faucets, shower valves and a renovation of kitchens and baths and a few well pumps. In addition of turning on and off plumbing for 30 plus years Always paid our bills on time etc. To be clear the plumbers and technicians that have performed work ALWAYS were professional and performed perfect work. I noticed after 2010 though it changed for the worse in regards to prices and service from the two women answering the phone As an example in 2009 I asked for a hose bib to be installed. To my surprise I received for $595.00 bill for a hose bib? In my younger years I did plumbing. It would take me an hour to do one hose bib a ball valve, a couple 90’s a union and a couple screws. Add an hour of travel time? That’s easily a $500.00 mark up on labor and parts. This past Monday I received a call from my tenant advising that the outdoor shower was running and wouldn’t shut off. So I called my caretaker he shut the outdoor shower off. I called Walter Smith plumbing. To say the woman that answered the phone had a God Complex would’ve been an understatement. When she told me “ maybe next week they can go to Chappy and fix my shower”. I said I’ve been a customer for 36yrs can you go out tomorrow or the next date? The God Complex woman actually said “ your Not our only customer “. Imagine saying that to one of your customers or being speaking to someone ? How dare I question the great office God lady( two of them ) that I find it unreasonable to maybe get my outdoor shower fixed 7/10 days after I called Anyway My experience is not isolated. myself and my neighbors also had our homes built around the same time. The plumber that came out the SAME day to fix my shower worked at WSP for 7 years and said the two women in the front office have a reputation of being nasty and rude to customers. Parting piece of advice ladies. Never Martha’s Vineyard. You would be terminated in Falmouth or Alexandria VA etc for speaking to customers in the manner you have obviously enjoyed over the past decade.
